Pediatric Unit

The Paediatric Department of the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) commenced as the Paediatric unit to execute its mission in 1995. Through the glorious services to children with different disabilities and their families, this unit has futuristic as the Paediatric Department of CRP to extend services to a larger number of beneficiaries in 2020.

This Department is committed to maximizing the capabilities of children with disabilities by providing evidence-based service through the collaborative efforts of Paediatric Consultants, Physiotherapists, Occupational therapists, and Speech and Language therapists. The children with disabilities start their journey in this department with the appropriate decision of their desired service including appropriate assistive device receiving after inclusive initial evaluation by MDT members through a proper referral from relevant sources at CRP. This department offers both inpatient and outpatient services.

Inpatient Services:

Paediatric department offer two weeks of residential inpatient services for 20 new patients each week, mostly 0 to 12 years old children with cerebral palsy and other physically challenged conditions. Besides comprehensive assessments and highly individualized physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech and language therapy individual sessions for the inpatients, we deliver combined and profession-wise different types of group therapy.

1. Combined group therapies:

  • Orientation class for caregivers
  • Weekly round with MDT members
  • Morning group therapy
  • Service-oriented inside visit
  • Outreach program
  • Caregiver training and health education
  • Parent’s counseling and meeting 
  • Hippo therapy
  • Feeding class
  • Inclusion planning as well as setting up attainable goals and assistive device selection for maximizing their level of independence. 

2. Physiotherapy group therapies:

  • Balance and coordination therapy
  • Back care education for caregiver or mother
  • Hydrotherapy

3. Occupational therapy group therapies:

  • Hand activities group therapy
  • Real feeding observation class
  • Feeding class
  • Dressing and toileting class
  • Play therapy at the playground

4. Speech and language therapy group therapies:

  • Communication Group
  • Preverbal skill group

 

Outpatient Services:

  • Individual service: It delivers outpatients dedicated individualized Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy services daily for children with different disabilities aged between 0 to 12 years.
  • Group therapy service: A well-structured 2-hour group therapy for children with autism runs once a week.

The Paediatric department treats different kinds of neurodevelopmental disorders and neurological and musculoskeletal conditions as below:

1. Neurological conditions:

  • Cerebral palsy
  • Bell’s palsy

2. Neurodevelopmental disorders:

  • Autism spectrum disorder(ASD),
  • Attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD),
  • Social communication disorders (SCD),
  • Learning disability,

  • Down’s syndrome

3. Physical disabilities:

  • Erb's palsy
  • Congenital deformity
  • Neuro-metabolic disorders
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Spina bifida
  • Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD)
  • Delay Development,
  • Guillain-Barre syndrome(GBS)
  • Myopathy and  leukodystrophy
  • Spinal muscular atrophy(SMA)
  • West syndrome

4. Musculoskeletal conditions:

  • Torticollis
  • Bow leg (Rickets)
  • knock knee
  • Fracture
  • Hip dislocation
  • Juvenile chronic arthritis
  • Foot deformities and  Gait abnormalities
  • Limb length discrepancy(LLD)
  • Spinal deformities
