Shanto from Gazipur is a well-liked cheerful boy of 12, in class six at school. In the middle of August, 2016, Shanto was playing with his friends, they climbed up a tree to pick some berries, when trying to clamber down he slipped and fell from the tree. His hand was broken and spinal cord was severely injured, paralyzing the lower body. He came to CRP from the Popular Hospital at Dhanmondi four months after his accident. CRP’s multidisciplinary team assessed him, and as he could not even sit unaided, admitted him. Shanto stayed for three and a half months, and received therapeutic and counseling services, regaining his muscle power and balance control with physiotherapy. His activities of daily living has been improved with occupational therapy, soon he will resume studies after coming to terms with his condition. The therapists said, as a paraplegic, he is a very active person with good hand movement and can do most of his chores by himself, because of the severity of the injury, he will be confined to the wheelchair for the rest of his life. It is time for him to continue his life back home with his family, he was very sad as he said he will miss CRP and the wonderfully friendly environment it has. His family mentioned how grateful they were to CRP and its donors who helped their son to finish his rehabilitation and sponsored his wheelchair.
